On August 17, the first grapes of the 2020 vintage began to be harvested at the vineyards of the private winery SHUMRINKA. This year, the season began with the harvesting of Chardonnay to create sparkling wines using the classic method.
The grapes are harvested by a team of 16 people exclusively by hand. Grapes are collected into small 10 kg boxes and promptly delivered to the winery, where they are cooled before being processed.
In total, the farm has 6.1 hectares of Chardonnay. The plots are located in two microterroirs, which are different in their soil and climatic characteristics. Harvesting began from the hotter plot where grapes quickly gained optimal characteristics for creating classic sparkling wine.
«The 2020 season was cooler than the previous one, the harvest of the first grapes for the production of sparkling wine began later, and the ripening is more uniform,» says Vlado Juričić, chief agronomist of the «SHUMRINKA» private winery. «Chardonnay gives us a good level of acidity, which is necessary for a quality sparkling wine. The yield is rather low, but the quality of the grapes this year is very good».
SHUMRINKA produces sparkling wines using an exclusively classical method with bottle aging. The first edition will be on sale by the end of 2020, and the classic made of grapes harvested this August will appear on the market no earlier than 2022.
